Ipswich Civic Centre was officially opened on 19 July 1975 by then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. At that time, the Civic Centre was largely seen as a community centre that provided a much-needed venue for touring performances, corporate functions and community events. It soon became well-known as a venue for weddings, school formals, graduation ceremonies, eisteddfodau and conferences, but was not really seen as an entertainment centre. These days, the facility is so much more, thanks largely to the introduction of the Festival of Theatre Program in 2004. Through this vibrant, evolving initiative, Ipswich Civic Centre has reinvented itself as a stunning combination of premier entertainment venue and community-focused function centre. While the venue proudly operates as a function and conference centre, it now combines those services with an extensive year-round program of local, national and international theatre events. In doing so, it has re-positioned itself as a multi-faceted centre which caters for its community and provides a drawcard for tourists and visitors.Ipswich Civic Centre was privileged to host a special visit by Gough Whitlam in July 2005 to mark the 30th anniversary of the official opening. It was an excellent opportunity to showcase just how far the facility had come in 30 years of operation.
