The Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre is the largest Aquatic Venue in New South Wales, in terms of attendances. Since opening in October 1994, the Centre has welcomed over 15 million visitors (a staggering 100,000 per month) and has hosted numerous state, national and international events. It has the largest swim school in Australia with 4,000 students and Health & Fitness Club Membership of 1,000.There's always plenty to do at the Centre. All the pools have professional supervision and the most advanced technology. The movable floor in the Training Pool and accessible facilities for people with special needs are designed with safety in mind. School Holidays are a definate winner with the kids!The average attendance during school holidays and summer weekends between 6,000 and 7,000 per day.The carnival season, December - April, is heavily booked until 2010. The Centre is a leading tourist attraction, included as a "stop over" on Blue Mountains coach tour.The Centre is home to NSW Institute of Sport programs such asWater Polo, Diving and Swimming.Telstra, major sponsors of Australian Swimming, offered $25,000 for the first world record to be set in the Competition Pool, in a FINA recognised long course event, by a male and a female swimmer - Ian Thorpe (AUS) and Penny Heyns (RSA), Pan Pacs '99.A Time Capsule has been placed below the eastern wall of the Competition Pool. It contains memorabilia including a copy of Sydney's Candidature File for the 2000 Olympic Games and a letter from FINA.The capsule will be opened on 16 September 2050, 50 years after the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
