Dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi again shows his skill in blending documentary with fiction under difficult circumstances, in this winner of the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes 2018. Panahi, playing himself, shows the famous Iranian actress Behnaz Jafari a video message that has been sent to him. It purports to show a young girl from a remote Azerbaijani village committing suicide because her family will not allow her to attend an acting conservatory in Tehran. The two set out for the village armed only with Panahi’s limited knowledge of the local language to uncover the truth. There they encounter the very famous pre-revolutionary actress Shahrzad, eking out a reclusive existence through painting and poetry.
