Abracadabra @ Palace Norton Street

From the maverick director of the Spanish Academy Award winning Blancanieves (Snow White 2012) comes a madcap comedy with echoes of classic Álex de la Iglesia. Housewife Carmen (the wonderful Maribel Verdú, Y Tu Mamá También) lives with her alpha-male husband Carlos (Antonio de la Torre, The Fury of a Patient Man SFF17) and their daughter Toñi in Madrid. At her nephew’s wedding, Carmen’s cousin Pepe - an amateur hypnotist - tries out his skills on Carlos but the trick goes wrong and Carlos becomes possessed by the spirit of a waiter who murdered seven people at the wedding venue in 1983. Oddly enough Carlos transforms to the antitheses of his normal behaviour: he becomes an attentive husband and doting father. Carmen, although pleasantly surprised, realises something’s up and embarks on an expedition to get her husband back. Pablo Berger writes and directs this genre-hopping, gloriously retro-pop cinematic rollercoaster ride where mayhem and magic fuse to formidable effect.
