Barney McAll returns to Australia this month for a national tour to launch his stunning new CD GRAFT. Graft is the seventh album by Barney McAll and continues the exciting trajectory. The album features vocalists Gian Slater and Sia Furler, the acclaimed 16 piece choir Invenio and Dan Weiss on drums. Graft is the music of now. Graft is a suite of music that looks at technology and the bizarre affect it is having on human connection. It is a wild musical sound painting reflecting the ever increasing ambiguity between virtual and real. Graft juxtaposes the purity of Gian Slater's Invenio Choir against a constantly morphing background of virtual and real, improvisation and composition, shadows and light. Like plants growing through concrete, a child commanding a touch screen, or a tiny beating heart inside a hard drive, these pieces are thought provoking and emotive. Since permanently moving to NYC from Australia in 1997 to join Gary Bartz's quartet (and working with him ever since), Barney McAll has played the broadest spectrum of gigs from directing Gospel choirs in church to the Downtown scene of The Knitting Factory and John Zorn's club The Stone. The Brooklyn based pianist has played with jazz heavyweights such as Jimmy Cobb (who featured on McAll's debut CD), the late Dewey Redman, and Billy Harper, as well as funk greats Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley and the JBs. His contemporary credits include Kurt Rosenwinkel's Heartcore group, and both Josh Roseman's New Constellations big band and Unit. He is also currently musical director for vocalist Sia Furler. The performance that made the most powerful impression came from New York-based Australian pianist Barney McAll. His visionary new work Graft (featuring two pianos, vibraphone and a 16-voice choir) combined soulful grooves, electronics, ethereal harmonies and exquisite lyricism.
