The Town Hall Hotel was formerly the residence of Erasmus Irving before the site was licensed in 1868.
According to Pots, Punks & Punters the St Kilda historical society’s excellent history of South Melbourne pubs by Becky Aizen the Town Hall was originally called the Cosmopolitan & was in operation in 1868. It was renamed the Town Hall around 1881 by C Harding probably as a result of the construction of the magnificent South Melbourne Town Hall a year or so earlier. World renowned singer Sylvia Fisher retained a family interest in the hotel even after joining Londons Covent Garden Opera Company in 1949.
Patrons, that have included over the years many notable from the music and entertainment industries, have always enjoyed the warm and friendly welcome that is a signature of the hotel much like its art deco facade remodelled in 1936. We hope to continue the traditions of the hotel while providing a country feel to an intimate city pub. Check out our menus and follow us on facebook to see whats on at the Townie. there is always something happening with giveaways and theme nights. So hope to see you soon at The Town Hall Hotel.
