Jasmine Rae 'If I Want To' Australian Tour 2014

Jasmine Rae has come a long way in five years - from the quirky, fresh-faced girl, barely out of her teens, who released her debut single Country Singer in 2008, into one of Australia’s most acclaimed and respected country artists. Now, with the release of her third studio album “If I Want To”, Jasmine has taken another step forward in her artistic evolution, with her most personal and mature work to date. “I feel the songs on my new album are a reflection of the journey I've been on in the last two years,” says Jasmine. “This album is an honest conversation between the listener and myself.” In the two years since Jasmine’s last album, the Melbourne-born singer-songwriter has been penning songs that reveal every facet of her life. Twelve of the thirteen tracks on “If Want To” are Jasmine Rae originals. Her list of co-writers is equally split amongst Nashville’s A-list and the best of Australia’s country songsmiths, including both members of McAlister Kemp (on different songs) and the veteran tunesmith, Allan Caswell. The album was recorded in Nashville with producer, Luke Wooten (Dierks Bentley’s ‘Home’). Longtime fans will be thrilled to hear Jasmine’s familiar girl-power anthems like My Daddy’s Name, about kicking an unworthy lover to the curb; the playful, R’n’B inflected Lazy Boy and the bluesy title track, co-written with Nashville songwriting legend Bob DiPiero, who has penned hits for Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn, Etta James and many others. “The song If I Want To is about taking the power back from someone in a relationship who has hurt you,” says Jasmine. “When a relationship ends, there’s often one person who wants to move on and one who wants to hang on. I’ve been both.” The album’s lightest, cheekiest track is Bad Boys Get Me Good, a duet with American country superstar (and 2013 US “Dancing with the Stars” champion), Kellie Pickler. “One of the reasons I was so keen to have Luke Wooten produce this album was because of his work on Kellie’s ‘100 Proof’ album, which I thought was a really great, honest country album”. When Wooten suggested Pickler as a duet partner, Jasmine leapt at the opportunity. The track features Jasmine and Kellie trading verses as they sing about their love for the wrong kind of men. “I love Kellie’s attitude and her accent,” says Jasmine. “She’s such a charismatic performer. Hearing her sing a song that I co-wrote is a real honour”. “If I Want To” also sees the singer-songwriter exposing herself emotionally to a greater degree than ever before. Many of the songs were written as Jasmine’s father was fighting a battle with cancer. Just Don’t Ask Me How I Am is about bottling up a pain you can’t share with the people in your life and These Hands is about caring for a loved one through thick and thin. But the album’s most confronting track is the closing song, the stunning ballad, First Song. “When my father lost his battle with cancer, I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to write another song again”.
