Melbourne’s Bob Sedergreen is one of Australia’s jazz treasures with a career at the top going back decades. As a pianist, leader, composer and educator Bob has been an inspiration to many including Garry Lee who will perform with him on vibraphone and guitar at The Ellington on Thursday 7 March. Bob has accompanied international legends of jazz including Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Milt Jackson, Royce Campbell [Bunbury International Jazz Festival -2008], Nat Adderley and Jimmy Witherspoon and in the case of the last two mentioned, touring throughout Australia as their Musical Director. In 2008 Bob received the Don Banks’ Memorial Fellowship, recognition for his lifetime services to Australian music. This prestigious award usually goes to classical musicians so it illustrates the respect with which Bob Sedergreen is afforded by Australia’s music community. He also won the inaugural Australian Jazz Award for piano/keyboards [1990]; Ken Myers Victorian Arts Centre Award [2006] – only jazz musician to receive this award. From traditional styles to the most contemporary Bob infuses the music with authority of style, creative expression and wit, in a manner that is never arrogant or condescending. He has recorded over 20 CDs as a leader or co-leader and performed at major jazz venues and festivals in Europe, North America and Asia as well as throughout Australia. At The Ellington, Bob will perform with Perth musicians Garry Lee [vibraphone, guitar] – they have worked together on various occasions at Bennetts Lane, Perth Jazz Society and Hale School [where Bob was a 2007 Visiting Artist]. Garry is an Australian Jazz Award winner [1993 – vibraphone], Churchill Fellow [1998]; Pete Jeavons [double bass] – Perth’s outstanding bassist who is first call to back a plethora of visiting international and interstate artists; and Gavin Kerr [drums] – leading jazz educator and arranger who is fast emerging as an outstanding band-leader with regular Sunday spots at The Ellington.
