Description:
The Iconic Taxi Club, in Darlinghurst, has been in existence for some 55 years. Officially registered as the Grosvenor Club Ltd. , the trading name ‘The Taxi Club’ evolved due to the Club being originally established as a social venue primarily for cab drivers. It’s humble beginnings saw The Taxi Club operating from adjoining Terrace houses, providing a facility for cab drivers to meet, socialise, or get a drink and a bite to eat during or after their working shift. Whilst the drivers were on the premises, the Taxi Club provided a mechanic and garage facility for the re-setting of the old analogue Taxi trip meters on their vehicles.
In the early days, the Taxi Club was one of the only few late night (24 hour) venues available, throughout Sydney. Due to these unique trading hours, the Taxi became a popular getaway for the likes of Les Girls, after their performances around Kings Cross. Due to the unique nature of the Club patrons, it attracted quite a following from various sections of the community. The Club’s clientele consisted of people from all walks of life. Not discriminating against race, religion, sexuality or gender, it became known as a venue that was literally a melting pot for all of society, in an embracing and accepting fashion.
