The sight of young artists fearlessly conquering concertos which strike fear into the hearts of much older players is familiar now, but 17 year old Esther Yoo's heart-stopping blend of confidence and bravura tempered by poise is indescribably exciting, especially in Sibelius' Violin Concerto, with which she won the 2010 Sibelius Competition in Helsinki. With its dark brooding opening, song-like slow movement and restlessly dancing finale, it's widely regarded as the most taxing in the repertoire. Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ballet is one of the greatest scores of the twentieth century, its transcendent "symphonic" qualities make it widely performed in the concert hall where it never fails to move audiences with its power and eloquence.
