Instead, he’s been on the road nearly non-stop with his band, "The Poor Choices" blasting through clubs across the U.S. and beyond. Along the way, he was inspired to write a crop of new tunes that the acclaimed songwriter says are “a layman’s take on our country – a snapshot of America in some small way.” The result: the sharply drawn collection ‘KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)’, his second release from Lost Highway/Universal. ‘KMAG YOYO’ (pronounced “kay-mag, yo-yo”) was the USA’s most played Americana album of 2011, beating out the likes of Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Alison Krauss & Union Station, Emmylou Harris Gregg Allman AND John Hiatt!
KMAG YOYO was nominated for two awards (Artist and Song Of The Year) at the 10th Annual Americana Honors and Music Awards in October, and continues to receive widespread critical praise: The New York Times asserts, “…[Carll] extends a worthy Texas tradition: the weathered, hard-drinking, weary but clear-eyed troubadour…,” while Spin Magazine included him in their feature “The Next Big Things: 11 Artists You Must Hear in 2011” calling him a “silver-tongue-in-cheek country iconoclast.”
2008‘s ‘Trouble In Mind’, received widespread critical acclaim, topping “Year End” lists at Esquire, the Los Angeles Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, American Songwriter, Newsday and the Nashville Scene. Additionally, Carll’s song ‘She Left Me For Jesus’ won the 2008 Americana Music Award for “Song of the Year”. In 2010 he was the recipient of New/Emerging Artist of The Year at the Americana Music Awards, an award won by Justin Townes Earle in 2009 and Mumford & Sons in 2011.
Now for the very first time Australian audiences will get their chance to see the acclaimed Austin based performer whose live shows have been described as a mixture of “high-test honky tonk, Haggard-esque sounds and sentiments, rock ’n’ roll racket and delicate,gospel-flecked folk.”
