It’s hard to believe that it’s over forty five years since Eugene Hideaway Bridges first picked up a guitar and started playing with his father, bluesman Hideaway Slim. Since then he has established himself as one of America’s finest blues and soul artists, both as a vocalist and guitarist.. Since the late 1990’s Eugene has made Australia his second home and played literally hundreds of shows in every State and in almost every town! What makes Eugene unique, apart from his soul drenched vocals and blazing guitar work, is that he is “the real deal” – a Texas bluesman in the classic mould with a background in soul and gospel that gives his music such a powerful impact. There would be few overseas artists who could claim over twenty seven Australian tours in the past decade but Eugene is a truly nomadic musician living his life on the road. Born in Louisiana in 1963, his father was blues guitarist Hideaway Slim and his mother was from the Bullock family synonymous with one Anna Mae Bullock - better known as Tina Turner. At five he was already playing with his father around Louisiana and with his brothers as The Bridges Brothers singing gospel in local churches. After moving to Texas and signing with the Air Force when he was only sixteen he left three years later to join the gospel group The New Chosen and later the world renowned Mighty Clouds Of Joy. A move to Houston saw the release of a number of blues and gospel recordings and the first lineup of the Eugene Hideaway Bridges Band who toured extensively throughout the USA. Eugene then found himself in Europe where he joined Big Joe Turner’s Memphis Blues Caravan. A year later he left to work under his own name again and formed the European version of the Eugene Hideaway Bridges Band, signing to the Blueside label and recording with legendary UK producer Mike Vernon. By 2000 he had moved to his current label Armadillo and released the much acclaimed Man Without A Home, gaining worldwide airplay and leading to appearances throughout Europe, Asia and of course Australia. His 2003 release, Jump The Joint, reached number four on the prestigious Living Blues Charts in the US and a year later he recorded the successful followup Coming Home at the Zone studio in DrIpping Springs, Texas. After four CDs with a full band, Eugene then went into the studio and recorded a stripped back album which included three tracks with ABC Radio National presenter Lucky Oceans featured on pedal steel. In 2009 he journeyed to San Antonio in Texas to record his first live album and last year was back at Dripping Springs to record Rock And A Hard Place which features a large studio ensemble of keyboards, guitars and horns.
