Martin Cilia, renowned for his guitar skills with legendary surf band the Atlantics will share the Thornbury and Espy stages with Mikelangelo and the Tin Star, who have developed a cult following nationally with their blend of eclectic and mesmerising blend of surf and western music.
The two bands will play individual sets and then join forces at the end for several songs with guitars blazing, go-go dancers swaying and Mikelangelo’s smooth crooning style and hypnotic stage presence seducing the audience.
Both artists are celebrating new CDs. Martin Cilia’s latest offering is Surfersaurus, featuring some of the classics Walk don’t run, Wipeout, Albatross, Endless Summer and Apache, which he played at his first gig as a thirteen year old.
“I wanted to breathe new life into these great vintage surf rock tunes and give them my sounds while still retaining the classic essence of the ‘known’ versions,” Cilia says.
Surfersaurus also features some Cilia originals.
For Mikelangelo, the extroverted and handsomely coiffed performer whose voice has elements of Hank Williams, Elvis and black soul legend Isaac Hayes, the Espy and Thornbury shows are a fitting showcase for his new CD The Surf’n Western Sounds of Mikelangelo and The Tin Star.
The CD was glowingly reviewed recently in the Sydney Morning Herald
“Don’t approach this disc unarmed. It is mad, bad and dangerous. Imagine a surfer riding a tsunami all the way from Bondi into a western saloon packed with glowering hombres who shoot first and ask about your music tastes later. Yes, that dangerous. Mikelangelo has escaped the clutches of the Black Sea Gentlemen only to fall in with fresh desperados whose surf’n western sounds answers the prayers of all who find the unrelenting earnestness of most music a hanging offence. The vibrato-laden twang of the guitars form a halo around Mikelangelo’s doomsday voice which is sometimes joined by the more sensual tone of St Clare.” John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald reviewer
Saint Clare and The Velocettes will be a supporting act.
