Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the APO (Australian Pops Orchestra & Australian Philharmonic Orchestra) with Australia’s favourite singers and musicians in this New Year’s Eve star-studded performances at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s State Theatre.
Celebrate 30 years of the APO while enjoying tributes to some of the greatest songs of the last century at the APO’s 2011 New Years Eve Concerts Philharmonic Phireworks. Enjoy the magnificent 75 piece orchestra accompanied by some of Australia’s most loved performers – the multi award winning country singer Melinda Schneider, The Phantom of the Opera lead Donald Cant, Doctor Zhivago lead Lucy Maunder, Young Talent Time legend Dennis Walter and young tenor extraordinaire James Egglestone – under the baton of world renowned British conductor Gavin Sutherland.
With six (matinee and evening) concerts, starting on Tuesday 27 December (8pm) and Wednesday 28 December (2pm & 8pm) at the Sydney Opera House and Friday 30 December (8pm) and Saturday 31 December (2pm & 8pm) at Melbourne’s State Theatre, audiences can start their New Year celebrations early and continue celebrating with fireworks, parties and more.
“There’s good reason why this show is still in hot demand for over 30 years in Melbourne and Sydney. Audiences keep returning time and again to usher in the New Year with entertainment that’s purely uplifting,” says singing sensation Melinda Schneider.
“I am really thrilled to be involved and we are inviting all of Sydney and Melbourne to this grand 30th Anniversary Party where the audience can hear their top performers and sing along to their favourite tunes.”
Highlights include songs from some of the greatest productions of modern theatre, including Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, My Fair Lady and The King and I, as well popular classics such as the Doris Day anthem Que Sera Sera, the haunting Amazing Grace and music from Bernstein, Rogers and Hammerstein and Strauss.
Melinda Schneider is a leading light of the ‘new-breed’ of Australian country artists. Melinda has produced (so far) six albums and two Gold records, as well as wining a swag of awards, including six CMAA Golden Guitars. Melinda released her first concept album last year, ‘Melinda does Doris’ A Tribute to Doris Day, which made its chart debut at #1 on the ARIA Jazz and Blues chart.
Lucy Maunder has worked extensively in both Australian and international theatre. Throughout 2011, Lucy played Lara opposite Anthony Warlow in the World Premiere production of Doctor Zhivago. Most recently, Lucy starred in the Victoria Opera production of The Threepenny Opera playing the role of Polly Peachum.
Back by popular demand, Donald Cant will once again wow audiences with his glorious voice. Donald surely belongs to the ranks of Australian musical theatre royalty, not just because he has performed for Prince Charles, Princess Diana and the Pope, but as our very own Phantom and recipient of Best Actor Awards.
Having started out on Young Talent Time in the early 70’s Denis Walter has carved out a lengthy career. Gold records, Command Performances and countless television appearances, Denis has refused to slow down and will release a Christmas album and tribute to Australian music next year.
James Egglestone is one of Australia’s finest young tenors, having already built up an impressive list of credits with some of the world’s greatest opera houses, philharmonic orchestras and festivals. In 2012, James will appear in the Opera Australia production of Madame Butterfly as Pinkerton in Sydney and Melbourne.
For 30 years the Australian Philharmonic Orchestra and Australian Pops Orchestra has presented its own blend of popular classical and contemporary music to Australian audiences.
