Legendary UK Comic John Cleese, in Sydney for the inaugural Just For Laughs Festival at the Sydney Opera House this week, has announced his first Australian stand up tour for Janury 2012. The national tour kicks off in Perth in January 2012 and finishes in Canberra mid April. Cleese, a force behind some of the most groundbreaking comedy of the 20th century, will appear live on stage in his brand new show entitled An Evening with John Cleese. Asked to describe his show he will bring to Australia, Cleese enthused “It’s an evening of well honed anecdotes, psychoanalytical tit‐bits, and unprovoked attacks on former colleagues, especially Michael Palin”. He is loved the world over for his comedic antics in this and other cult films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, The Life of Brian and Fierce Creatures; In 1998 Cleese won a British Academy Award for Best Actor in A Fish Called Wanda which also starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Kevin Kline. He also appeared in two John Bond movies – The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day. His distinctive English accent has been put to good use on several animated childrens films, voicing King Harold in Shrek 2, Shrek The Third a Shrek Ever After and Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone; and of course the ever memorable television series Fawlty Towers. Few comedy troupes have reached the same fame of Monty Python, and a large part of that success was due to John Cleese and his impeccable timing and sense of humour. Cleese has mastered everything from dry wit to slapstick humour, making his type of humour one that everyone can enjoy. He is the master comedian and admired and respected by everyone. An author of several books, Cleese contributed to The Pythons: Autobiography. He also reunited with the surviving members of Monty Python in 2009 to celebrate the group’s 40th anniversary. Cleese is looking forward to his first tour of Australia.
