Lindsay Phillips stands resolute and alone, armed only with a guitar and his voice. He exists in stark contrast to the hip, fashionable and hot young acts that litter the landscape of popular music. He is, in some ways, a man out of time; a lone messenger who, through his singular voice and song writing style, arrives bearing dark tales of hope, love, loss and redemption.
Despite the melodrama that might attend such a description, his music is the opposite. It is delivered in an unhurried, confessional style. It stands apart, but never alienates. And while it is concerned with the here and now, it still manages to sound timeless. In 2010, Phillips released his debut album Varning, a stark affair redolent of the simplicity and intimacy of the countless live shows he has undertaken over the years. In 2011, Lindsay arrives with Exile - the first single from his second album Taedium Vitae. Exile opens boldly with horns, strings and chorale providing the perfect accompaniment to its journey. Musically, there are subtle nods to Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits and Kurt Weill, while lyrically, the song conveys its coded message of warning via Phillips’ razor sharp lyrics.
To coincide with the release of Exile, Lindsay will be embarking on a national tour throughout August.
Exile is now available as a FREE download from the Departed Sounds website. Full length album Taedium Vitae is scheduled to be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats in early 2012 through Departed Sounds / Other Tongues.
