Wit-hot maverick The Bedroom Philosopher delivers a summer-funk yacht-folk tribute to the most unlikely of characters – the tram inspector. Who else but Melbourne's left-field laureate could make handing out a ticket sound so perverse (and catchy), while providing some backstory to these concession card craving villians.
The track is taken from the album version of Songs From The 86 Tram the Award winning 2009 Melbourne Comedy Festival show. In the studio The Philosopher enlisted the help of producer Chris Scallen (Avalanches, Akon, Baz Luhmann's Australia) and Harry Angus on brass, as well as his smokin' hot band of hipster slayers The Awkwardstra. The track is mastered by Greg Calbi of New York's Stirling Studios, an industry legend who has mastered albums by David Bowie, John Lennon and MGMT.
Having spent five years frequenting Melbourne’s public transport system, The Bedroom Philosopher set out to write a concept album that reflected the oddness and energy that emanates from these stop-start, spirit lotteries. Unquestionably one of city’s most iconic beats, the 86 tram carries the lifeblood of the community and Songs From The 86 Tram is a “we-are-tramily” tribute with caustic wit and surprising empathy.
The single caps off a scintillating year for The Philosopher, who released his second album Brown & Orange with a national tour, as well as taking out the Director's Choice Award for Songs From The 86 Tram. He fronts Triple R's sketch comedy show Lime Champions every Monday, is a senior writer for Frankie and is currently being spotted on ABC TV impersonating a young John Safran. For reals.
