Joe Gideon & The Shark are a smashingly good new UK brother/sister duo (but a real one!) playing a roaring set of dark and driving blues rock, with incredible, complex (and often hilarious) lyrical narratives. Gideon plucks six strings, dreams stories and sings. That is, he sings, plays guitar and writes the words. His lyrics are worthy of pulp fiction novels, or possibly fourth year psych papers.
His kid sister Viva, a.k.a. ‘The Shark’, plonks, stomps and honks. Or in other words, she plays drums, piano, effects, and backs up her bro on vocals, often all at the same time. Always one to mix art and sport, Viva is also a
renowned rhythmic gymnast, representing England in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona!
Both are formerly members of Bikini Atoll, a band who released two albums on Bella Union, the second recorded by geeky genius and indie production icon Steve Albini. They left and then formed a family band and spent 2006 getting drunk in a barn writing songs on their 8 track recorder, before breaking it out to the wider world...
It’s been a few years now and in this time they’ve been invited to play with great artists around Europe; Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Archie Bronson Outfit, The Duke Spirit, and Michael Gira to name a few. Joe Gideon & The Shark are recommended for anyone who likes The Birthday Party, The Gun Club, The Fall, The Kills, The Black Keys, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The White Stripes, et al.
