If ‘punk’ means “do it yourself”...
And ‘folk’ means “of the people”...
...then Australian band The Rumjacks can be said to play folk punk music.
Whether belting out broadsides accompanied only by acoustic guitars or turning everything up for folk-infused punk rock, The Rumjacks will characteristically be combing the pure, unaffected essence of music written and played for and by real people.
Haircuts come and go, and gadgets are of limited value, but The Rumjacks sing their own songs regardless of all and sundry. And they take old folk songs, hit them over the face with a bucket of ice water, stand them up, buy them a glass of rum and sing them like they should be sung, in the here and now.
The Rumjacks tip their scally caps to the past but they acknowledge that music is not a question of historical re-enactment. The energy in a song is there to be let loose, whether that’s in a packed venue or just singing around a table.
Since their inception in 2008, The Rumjacks have played up and down the Australian East Coast and can be found working the sweaty dens of Sydney and the hinterland every week. They have two EPs available, ‘Hung, Drawn & Portered’ and the brand new ‘Sound As A Pound’. Their consistent drive and energy has scored them festival shows and support slots with overseas acts such as UK Subs.
