Let's set it straight: Numbers Radio are not a hyped up experiment in clever marketing or music nostalgia. They are a real band playing real music and apparently a lot of people have been paying attention… From day one there's been industry speculation that this is not just an average rock band and the release of their debut album Acquiring Satellites is set to confirm to the world that Numbers Radio have arrived.
In August 2008 unknown Brisbane band Numbers Radio introduced themselves to Australian audiences and created an industry buzz with their critically acclaimed, self-titled Debut EP. Before too long the radio single for Come On was promoted to high rotation on Triple J and received plenty of action on community radio and the clip on commercial TV. Recently the band followed up with Boring - an exclusive Triple J single lifted from the Debut album - which proved to be anything but it's namesake by going straight to high rotation and provoking a constant barrage of requests. To back all of this up the band's spent the past 12 months exploring the tour circuit of the East Coast including killer performances at Homebake 08 and in a supporting role for Birds Of Tokyo in 2009.
Acquiring Satellites was recorded over several stages at Black Box studio and various random locations with the overseeing eyes and ears of producer Jeff Lovejoy. All of the "beds" for each track were put down live to capture the band's raw energy and potency while the different layers and refining touches were added slowly over time to compliment and enhance the songs. The end result is a combination of the Numbers Radio sound that fans already know and love as well as some fresh and new sounding material that showcases the bands' broader musical leanings. As you would expect, there's plenty of energetic and catchy new numbers (Automatic, You And I, Clothes) that pay homage to the band's skate punk heritage as well as the singles Come On and Boring. This album is more than just a fresh interpretation of four-on-the-floor rock, it's multi-dimensional. Tracks like Hold On Tight, Rollin, Quicksand and Mediator have lighter moments and elements of a pop sensibilitiy that has so far only been hinted at on the band's Debut EP.
As far as debut albums go, this one is pure quality and is destined to earn the band a massive following. In short, Acquiring Satellites is a fresh and exciting independent release from a new Australian band that is set to explode in 2009.
Acquiring Satellites will be released on Valley Trash through MGM Distribution on Monday September 14, 2009.
Numbers Radio will be touring nationally in support of the album during October 09.
