Australian four-piece [Me] are thrilled to announce the release of its newest single, Westward Backwards, and a National Tour.
The acclaimed Melbourne group’s second single this year, Westward Backwards is an awesome display of musical power akin to the group’s previous single, Working Life, which blasted its way onto Triple J earlier this year.
"I love the hugeness of this track. We all know Muse love Queen. Well this track is the bastard son of that union." - Richard Kingsmill, Triple J
There is also an emotional connection between the two songs, but where Working Life lamented the drudgery of being caught in a dull, daily routine, Westward Backwards is an anthem to breaking free of the mundane and into the life we truly wish for.
This manifests itself in the single’s wildly theatrical climax, propelled by the volcanic tenor of singer Luke Ferris and the band’s uniquely grandiose sound, both of which have earned them critical acclaim.
Much intensity also arises from [Me]’s prominent classical influence, so for their latest single, the group engaged Melbourne composer Jonathan Dreyfus as Westward’s orchestrator.
Recalls Dreyfus, “it was great, the band was really open to my take on their material and let me run wild. The piece was already huge when I came in, so it was a real challenge to inject that bit of extra drive.”
Certainly, [Me] itself shows no signs of slowing momentum. Westward comes as its second major single in only four months, and the group is backing its release with a national tour this July and August – Westward Backwards East Coast Forwards.
Set to torch 10 destinations, the quartet pull in quite the kaleidoscope of elements into their live show. Percussion jams, a‘capella, synth science and orchestral sounds are all to be heard on the tour.
East Coast Forwards Westward Backwards will see the band hit the road with other theatrical rockers, Sydney’s Le Kingste and Tokenview.
With excitement brewing around their forthcoming debut album, it seems there really is no going backwards for [Me].
