Last week saw BONJAH launch their debut album on the streets of Melbourne during peak hour traffic to no less than 300 people. The city of Melbourne closed a lane off on Elizabeth Street to allow the band to perform to fans in front of the GPO Building. Next month sees the band embark on an extensive national tour including support slot with the Who and a performance at the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Perth. Along the way and in as many places as possible BONJAH will also go back to their roots and perform on the streets, including Pitt Street Mall in Sydney and the Queen Street Mall in Brisbane
BONJAH’s tale is truly unique. A few guys meet in New Zealand and start a band. They then decide to move to Melbourne to try to make some money doing what they love best – making music. BONJAH were granted the last ever legal busking license for a full piece band in Melbourne two years ago and have since lived exclusively off their music, selling in excess of 15,000 cd’s along the way.
Two years on and the band have released their debut album, ‘Until Dawn’ (produced by Tom Spender: Offcuts, Custom Kings), distributed through MGM. After playing over 450 shows including eight national tours, the band have a very solid fan base nationwide.
