The all-time classic surf film Morning of the Earth – the second highest grossing surf movie in history – is set to take to the stage in a new guise. In September and October 2008, Sydney’s State and Melbourne’s Palais Theatres will host a brand new production Morning of the Earth – The Original Film & Music Live in Concert.
A treasured Australian icon, Morning of the Earth captured the spirit of a generation of surfers on release in 1972. Directed by Albert Falzon, also the founder of Tracks surfing magazine, it portrays famous and unknown surfers alike (including Nat Young and Gerry Lopez) living in spiritual harmony with nature, making their own boards (and even their own homes) as they traveled in search of the perfect wave across Australia’s north east coast, Bali and Hawaii. Since then, the film and music has resonated with each new generation, having captured the true ethos and spirit of surfing in a unique and inspiring manner.
Morning of the Earth – The Original Film & Music Live in Concert will feature special guests Lior and Old Man River. They perform alongside original producer G.Wayne Thomas and singer songwriter Brian Cadd who together constructed the original top 10 rock soundtrack. The show rolls on with legendary Tamam Shud guitarist Tim Gaze and guest vocalist Mike Rudd (Spectrum). A top 10, platinum selling hit, the soundtrack features an array of country-soul and psych folk-rock songs including, "Open Your Heart", "Sure Feels Good", "Simple Ben" and "Making It On Your Own" plus many more classics.
Audiences can expect a thrilling and memorable evening with special guests, a rock band and orchestra and the original film screened to coincide with the live music performances. New documentary film footage from Albert Falzon will also be premiered at the event – while original Morning of the Earth soundtrack producer G.Wayne Thomas returns to the stage after years behind the scenes to perform his classic songs from the film.
Producer for Morning of the Earth – The Original Film & Music Live in Concert, Amanda Pelman from Chugg Entertainment said, "Some films stay with you all your life, and crystallise a certain philosophy of living - Morning of the Earth was that defining moment for me. I am lucky enough to have Brian Cadd as my life partner and I will share all the musical memories of this project with him when he plays it live. This show is a culmination of these amazing images and sounds with great contemporary artists like Lior performing because he totally 'gets it' in the now. I hope you as the audience will too."
Promoter Michael Chugg said, "Who can forget the summer of ’72 – it was Sunbury and it was Morning of the Earth – what a time!"
Original Morning of the Earth film director Albert Falzon said, "I’ve lived and breathed the lifestyle portrayed in this film for many years now, and it is truly wonderful to think it is now experiencing a renaissance. The essence of surfing never changes, regardless of how big the associated corporations get. New audiences and generations seem to constantly draw inspiration from its visuals, idyllic lifestyle and the music which is such an important part of the whole – and for me, that is a very humbling evolution to witness."
Guest performing artist Lior said, "Morning of the Earth is a pioneer film – the first to realise the beauty of marrying surfing footage with a music soundtrack, intertwining the two to create a beautiful and complete experience. I am thrilled to be a part of this production, which will reignite this total experience for a whole new audience."
Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the greatest surfing films ever made – reignited with its original soundtrack performed live in concert by a mix of this country’s best classic and contemporary music talent.
