The Producer of Hedwig & the Angry Inch, David Hawkins, today announced the casting of a new Hedwig for the upcoming Australian tour. Michael Falzon, last seen in We Will Rock You and War of the Worlds will perform the role of the Punk Rock glamazon transvestite, Hedwig.
As a result of this change and due to a more hectic rehearsal schedule, the Producers have had to move the Metro Theatre dates to November 18th.
Patrons choosing to hold over their tickets until the November shows will receive 1 free ticket per booking.
Patrons who wish to get a refund must contact the Metro Theatre as soon as possible on 02 9550 3666
Michael Falzon steps into the role after spending the last 6 months in London working with his own production company, SMA Productions. Best known for his lead role in the rock epic, We Will Rock You, Michael received both Helpmann and Mo Award nominations for his role as Galileo.
Producer, David Hawkins said today “While we are, of course, very disappointed that we have had to recast the role of Hedwig, finding a leading man like Michael Falzon who’s able to play this role is incredibly exciting.
‘Hedwig is a true Rock Star role and Michael’s prodigious talent and his previous turn in We Will Rock You, makes him perfect for the role.’
‘His extensive musical theatre and production background also means he’ll be able to step up to the role of Hedwig with ease.’
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH tells the story of Hedwig Schmidt, the unfortunate victim of a gruesomely botched sex-change operation, and an “internationally ignored song-stylist”. Her journey to find true love, “her other half”, is a rock and roll odyssey which leads her across the Berlin Wall, across the world, and from man to woman.
LUCINDA SHAW, most recently wowing audiences as the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot, will take on the role of trusty Man Friday, Yitzhak.
The left-of-centre off-Broadway production, with text by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, opened at New York’s Jane Street Theatre in 1998. Gradually, the show became a cult hit. Like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, it’s the kind of production that fanatics boast of seeing 100, 200, even 400 times.
Produced by David Hawkins, directed by Craig Ilott, choreography by Kelley Abbey, and musical direction by Tina Harris, the creative team bringing the Deutsch Diva to life are passionately connected to Hedwig.
