Sydney Film Festival 2012 @ State Theatre

Description:

Set in Sydney's trendy Inner West, this sexy Aussie comedy follows a trio of housemates enjoying their hedonistic twenties. Throwing weekly house parties, Jonah (Ryan Kwanten), Stevie (Sarah Snook) and Gus (Ryan Corr) muddle through life, unimpeded by adult responsibilities and long-term entanglements. However the partying comes to an abrupt halt when Jonah is diagnosed with testicular cancer. Facing infertility, Jonah becomes obsessed with having a child before it is too late. Not Suitable for Children deftly straddles raunchy comedy, romance and drama, with rising star Sarah Snook (seen in SFF 2011's Official Competition film Sleeping Beauty) as the no-nonsense Stevie - a brilliant foil to Ryan Kwanten's delightfully clueless Jonah. It is impressive that Kwanten, despite huge success with True Blood on American TV, regularly returns home to make great independent films. Not Suitable for Children follows Griff the Invisible and Red Hill (SFF 2010); and Kwanten has yet again chosen to work with a first-time filmmaker in Peter Templeman, who uses his debut feature to capture the unique charms of Sydney's most bohemian suburbs, with their dilapidated terraces, cute cafés and free-spirited residents. A superb blues-rock score peppered with Australian and international bands enhances this delightfully boisterous local film.
