The Enmore Theatre, Sydney

The perfect ending to a buzzing work week was checking out brother and sister folk duo Angus and Julia Stone on Friday night. The genetically blessed duo performed to a packed Enmore Theatre (mainly comprised of teens besotted with Angus calling out things like “I love your beard Angus!”) and proved musically why they have a big following.
Julia’s sweet sounding tones evoked Bjork, while the soothing husky voice of Angus filled a stage which was decorated with a fairy lit willow tree, street lamp, Persian carpets and a night sky backdrop. Très romantique.
Immediately after the set begins, Angus and Julia begin taking turns – she sings one, he sings one. They both deliver equally and take you on a journey mellowed with warm and fuzzy feelings. As Angus sings, Julia floats around the stage dancing on her tip toes. When Julia sings, Angus fades into the starry night background with his guitar or soft backup vocals.
Their musical talent is obvious when they move through a range of instruments – Julia alternating between trumpet, accordion, guitar, harmonica and keyboard with effortless ease and Angus switches between harmonica and guitar. Julia appeared the less shy sibling and offered a little banter with the audience but still kept slightly guarded, reiterating what their purpose was – to compel the audience with their music.
They covered all their crowd-pleasers and performed their own great unplugged versions of Olivia Newton John's ‘You’re The One That I Want’ from Grease and also a cover of Neil Young’s ‘Comes a Time’ .
Listening to Angus and Julia’s music makes you feel like you just want to relax with a bottle of red and take in every little bit of sound. Overall, an excellent performance and I'm proud to know that they are Australians. Can't wait to hear what they come out with next.
