Set in the coastal town of Newcastle, this visceral action drama is a coming-of-age tale of elusive dreams and the eternal wave.

Combining sublime surfing beaches with the raw energy, music and rebellion of teen culture, Newcastle tells the story of 17-year old Jesse who lives in the shadow of his older brother Victor.

Jesse is determined to win the Junior Surf Pro final and to succeed where Victor failed. Winning would mean a one-way ticket out of Newcastle and a career beyond his pre-destined future – working on the coal barges. 

As a diversion before the finals, Jesse and his mates plan a weekend away with some local girls. Much to his dismay, Fergus, his geeky, twin brother gets to tag along.  But when Victor and his gang arrive at the isolated beach an unofficial contest ensues.

This momentous weekend leads them to discover themselves and what’s really important.

Dirty Deeds and the Castle. I love laughing at the raw 'kitschness' of Australian culture represented in these films. As I grew up on the coast, Puberty Blues and Bra Boys have alot of cultural resonance with me too, they'd be close behind... Their Australiana qualities mean you can really empathise with the characters, it's uncanny how  'close to home' they get. Australian films rock!

damn so many, "smoke them if you've got 'em" a great apocalyptic comedy set on punt road (or the smoldering ruins of) mad max one and two

I would have to say "Shine", for the great acting, and a true story well-told about a marvellously talented Australian.
