The Swimmer (1968)
Burt Lancaster stars in this adaptation of John Cheever's dreamlike short story about one man's highly unusual attempt to find meaning in his life. On the morning after a booze-filled night, Ned Merrill wakes up in a haze, confronted by the sterility of his isolated, wealthy suburban existence. So he decides to traverse this upper-class world swimming pool by swimming pool: he goes to each neighbor's house, swims through the chlorinated waters of the requisite backyard pool, and chats with the owner. Among the people he sees are his longtime mistress, a sexy babysitter and a couple of politically-liberal (or so they believe) nudists. This interesting, overlooked film is a visually captivating look at the essential emptiness of the "American Dream" Sydney Pollack directed additional sequences, but received no screen credit.

Witness Captain Invincible exiled from the U.S. during the McCarthy era, (the result of being accused of communist sympathies in the 50's because he wears a bright red cape, flies without a pilot's license and wears underwear in public ) now an alcoholic bum living in Australia. However, when the sinister Mr. Midnight ... hatches a nefarious plan to annihilate citizens of New York City, our hero is called back to America to save the day -- but first he must re-attain those long-dormant superpowers!
IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A PLANE, IT'S SUPERMAN the Musical (1975)
This TV special is so seldom seen, (for a reason) Nine years after its demise, on Broadway ABC aired it in an 11:30 p.m. timeslot. Eliminating many of the original songs, it has crude pasteboard sets, looks as if they couldn't afford second takes, and was shot-on-video. After quickly regurgitating his origin (with his rocket ship labeled "Contents: One Innocent Babe"), we head to Metropolis, where Superman (charisma-challenged David Wilson) stops crime while keeping his Daily Planet day job as Clark Kent. Lesley (Ann) Warren is a sexy (and seemingly lobotomized) Lois Lane, who barely notices Clark, yet pines for Superman. But in a strange move, the story focuses as much on the supporting lunks as our title hero: Kenneth Mars is Planet columnist Max Mencken, who despises Superman; Loretta Swit is reporter Sydney Carlton, who tries to seduce Clark; and instead of an all-singing, all-dancing Lex Luthor, we get 4th-rate scientist Dr. Abner Sedgwick. There isn't much of a plot. Some klutzy sing an off-key tune about their plan to rub out Superman, while Sedgwick lures Sup into a trap involving the world's cheesiest looking "Death Ray" and plots with Max to disgrace the hero.

Die Monster Die (1965) Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, Boris Karloff stars as the wheel chaired master of a strange old house in Arkham, England who acquires mysterious powers when he is zapped by a radioactive meteorite. His daughter (Suzan Farmer) is being courted by a young and bewildered American (Nick Adams), who ultimately must flee the premises from the monstrous patriarch.
The Dunwich Horror (1970)
Lurking in the quiet village of Dunwich, a supernatural horror lies in wait in this adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft story. When a cute college coed (Sandra Dee) and her professor (Ed Begley) visit the library at the infamous Miskatonic University, they discover a young man (Dean Stockwell) who wishes to check out the dreaded Necronomicon. An ancient book for divining demons, the Necronomicon allows its user to bring hell to Earth, and human sacrifice is the required offering. Pretty young Sandra Dee is the creature's prey...

In the 1920s, impoverished horror writer Randolph Carter rents a room from Mrs. Caprezzi, an elderly land lady. He discovers a pool of ammonia on the floor that has leaked down the wall from the room above. Mrs. Caprezzi, while cleaning ... up the ammonia, regales Randolph with strange stories of Dr. Muoz (Jack Donner), the eccentric old gentleman who lives in the room upstairs. Night of a 1000 Cats
In the Mexican horror film The Night of the Thousand Cats, the villain of the story is a handsome, wealthy playboy (Hugo Stiglitz) who likes to make love to vast numbers of lovely women. For some reason, once he has had his way with them, he decapitates them, preserves their heads in alcohol, and feeds their bodies to his many cats. He travels out of his mansion in fabulous motorcars, motorcycles and helicopters in pursuit of feminine fulfillment. Eventually the cats choose their own victim.

Lost Music Documentaries
Eat the Document (1972)
Eat The Document is one of the top five rockumentaries ever made, up there with the likes of that other Dylan flick, Don't Look Back, The Beatles Anthology. Edited and Directed by Dylan himself, with D.A Pennebaker waving the camera about, Eat The Document follows Dylan and The Band on their 1966 world tour, in particular, the European and British legs of said jaunt. Don't Look Back obviously got a little too close to Robert Zimmerman for comfort, so here we are drawn back once more into the surreal, chaotic mind of Bob Dylan, poet, musical genius, and bohemian artistic type.
Cracked Actor: A Film about David Bowie (1975)
This excellent documentary - originally broadcast by the BBC in 1975 - may seem slow moving and "arty" to those weaned on Biography's breezy chrono-bio clip-show style, but it's as honest a portrait as you'll ever find on the enigmatic singer, captured in the midst of an intensely creative period, but fueled and debilitated by massive cocaine use. It contains some unusually candid behind-the-scenes footage as well as providing fascinating glimpses of the fabled 1974 "Diamond Dogs" tour, unavailable elsewhere. If you can find a good gray market copy, snap it up. Otherwise, pester the BBC to give this a proper release.

Chained for Life (1951)
A judge is having trouble deciding on a verdict for the murder case he is presiding over. His problem is this: although it looks like a simple cold-blooded killing, the perpetrator is Vivian Hamilton (Violet Hilton) who happens to be a Siamese twin, joined at the hip to her sister, Dorothy (Daisy Hilton). We are privy to their testimony as they explain how they got into this situation; they were singers performing in vaudeville and a marriage stunt was dreamt up by their manager (Allen Jenkins) to bring publicity to their act. Dorothy's husband-to-be was Andre (Mario Laval), who had a pistol and rifle shooting act, and he saw the marriage as a way of getting to the top of the bill, but things got complicated when Dorothy actually fell in love with him...Written by Nat Tanchuck, Chained for Life is an odd item of fifties exploitation which starred two real-life conjoined twins, Daisy and Violet, and drew on their experiences with their disability. The murder plot was, you'll be relieved to know, invented by the screenwriter, and the twins had made an appearance on the big screen two decades before, in director Tod Browning's notorious Freaks, another film that they were only cast in because of their distinctive medical condition. Here, as stars of the show, they get to do a little more acting - and singing too.

McLuhan's Wake

Spliff (Screening Perth's Local Independent Films)
The SPLIF Short Film Festival is a non-profit independent project that has developed steadily as a platform for independent WA filmmakers since 2001. It has co-ordinated many micro-cinema screenings in venues through out Perth and regional WA and has featured as part of Revelation Perth International Film Festival since 2003. SPLIF encourages input by new and emerging filmmakers who create films that that are Low budget and High adventure! The intention is to expose this work to people who are seeking an alternative film viewing experience. Festival Director Ivan Borgnino has been cultivating alternative screen culture in Perth since 2001. He has no previous film background or university degree and is not an academic. When he was a small boy he entered the wrong cinema and saw 2001 a Space Odyssey. The rest is history. This 2-hour program is a retrospective collection of some of the coolest short films SPLIF has screened from 2001 to 2007.

Films include Wings to Hawaii (1950s) and Land Divers of Pentecost (1970s) and a look at the independence of Samoa all on 16mm film.

Devil Times Five (1974)
Five little psychopathic monsters en-route to a state run mental hospital for the criminally insane survive a horrifying bus accident in the California mountains. The tykes make their way across the frozen winter countryside and take up residence in a resort home owned by a local hospital magnate. They then proceed to terrorize, torture and murder the six adults on-hand in a single minded game to collect "People Toys" for a life sized play set up in the loft bungalow of the chalet's caretaker. Creepy, inappropriately entertaining and surprisingly well made, this is a highly recommended shocker for fans of low budget 1970s American horror

Sasquatch Odyssey
This documentary film Sasquatch Odyssey: The Hunt for Bigfoot follows the careers of the four most famous Bigfoot investigators in the world--Rene Dahinden, John Green, Grover Krantz, and Peter Byrne. All four of these men began their pursuit of the legendary beast during the 1950s, when reports and evidence of the creatures first became public. The phenomenon at large is also explored, contrasting the attempts by those men to truly investigate the possibility of Bigfoot's existence with the more eccentric Sasquatch enthusiasts, along with the often misinformed and absurd image of the creature in the popular culture and media. A fascinating film for anyone seriously interested or just curious about the field of cryptozoology and the Bigfoot phenomenon, Sasquatch Odyssey seeks to take a reasoned look at the search for a mysterious and hidden animal.

W Is War (dir. Willy Milan, 1983)
Possibly the most outrageous, if only, entry in the Gay Post-Apocalypse (or "Gaypocalypse") genre from veteran cheese monger Willy (Clash Of The Warlords, Ultimax Force) Milan. Imagine an unnatural wedding of Death Wish and Mad Max 2: undercover cop Ally aka W2 is neutered by a futuristic, Satanic and very non-hetero biker gang. Unable to pleasure his now-promiscuous wife, he embarks on a revenge spree against the eeeeevil Nesfero's gang - in a souped-up penis substitute! A squalling, fuzzed-out biker soundtrack, pointless explosions galore and literally every available stunt guy in Manila tumbling to their "deaths" make this the high watermark of insane Filipino cinema.
D'Wild Wild Weng (dir. Eddie Nicart, 1982) Weng Weng's third and rarest starring role as "Mr Weng", a government agent sent to the troubled Santa Monica to rescue the townsfolk from the corrupt new Mayor. It's a midget Filipino western, with everyone in Mexican mustaches and sombreros! Fans of Weng Weng will recognize most of the cast from For Your Height Only and The Impossible Kid, and will spill their cereal over two-foot-nine Weng's insane gravity-defying antics. Note to Weng Weng fans: we're filming the evening as part of our "Search For Weng Weng documentary, so PLEASE come along and fly the colours!

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1987)
"Rowdy" Roddy Piper, the former WWF superstar, and star of John Carpenters "They Live" stars in this ultra campy low budget post apocalyptic thriller as Sam Hell, one of the few fertile males left on Earth after WWIII. Rescued from torture by a government official, Sam is outfitted with a genital monitor and sent, along with an attractive Medtech officer named Spangle (Bergman), to fertilize as many females as he can. However, when Hell and Spangle discover that the nefarious Captain Toty, the ruler of a city populated by half-human/half-frog mutants, has taken a number of healthy human females captive, they invade Frogtown to rescue the captive women. An often funny and genuinely effective sci-fi thriller, HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN is good freakish fun for those with a taste for camp.

UFO's It Has Begun
In 1974, American documentary producer, Robert Emenegger, was asked by the Republican Party to produce a film about UFOs, using only official, government people and files. He was promised footage of an actual ‘flying saucer' landing that had occurred at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico back in 1964. His film was made and given the title of UFOs: Past, Present and Future. Unfortunately, the promised footage was never forthcoming, but Emenegger had shot the dramatized parts of the segment. What he was forced to do instead was use paintings of the alien craft and the meeting that occurred with its occupants. A few years later, in 1976, the documentary was re-released as UFOs: It Has Begun and again in 1979 (no doubt to cash in on the success of the Steven Spielberg smash-hit movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), with additional material added from French ufologist Jacques Vallee. Rod Serling, Burgess Meredith and Jose Ferrer present evidence that U.F.O.s are actually alien spacecraft from other planets and outline the government's cover-up. Exploring from as far back as the origin of man and the first U.F.O. sightings, our three hosts guide us though a world rarely seen based factual findings.

Deadhead Miles (1972)
Cross Joseph Minion and Hunter S. Thompson and you will have some idea what to expect from this fantastic, rare, criminally under seen, barely released (never in theaters, never on video or DVD) gonzo trucker film written by Terrence Malick (one of his early great anomalies); before writing and directing "Badlands" a year later. Shelved by the studio and never really released; for rumor has it, being too un-commercial. Alan Arkin, dressed like a sea captain, aimlessly sails the American highways in his 18 wheeler mumbling manic, southern accented non; carnivalizing roadside stops and happenstance towns while out-weirding cops and weigh stations with his new cryptic, over coated hitchhiker buddy (The Jefferson's Paul Benedict). Malick seems to have that rarified talent for illuminating and surfacing, without pretension, that hard to reach, truthful undercurrent of illogic and neurosis that permeates inside the human. "Deadhead Miles" is a trucker's term for driving a semi with no load in the trailer; hence Arkin's character and not necessarily his truck. Hilarious and sublime. Highly Recommended
