The Pioneers of Electronic Music
Archival performance footage by Morton Subotnick, Laurie Spiegel, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Mother Mallard, and Holger Czukay makes for an interesting investigation into the pioneers of Electronic music. Likewise, Paul Lansky's private lesson with Theremin inventor Leon Theremin is an example of how non-user friendly electronic musical instruments could be, even to people who should have the best sense of how to approach them. Don Letts live & intimate in the Mu-Meson Archives Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in the film and music world by a substantial body of work from the late 70's through the 80's, 90’s and well into the millennium. In March 2003 he won a Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway to the World’. He came to notoriety in the late 70's as the DJ that single handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. It was whilst as a dj at the first punk club 'The Roxy' in 1977, that Don adopted the punk D.I.Y ethic and begun to make his first film 'The Punk Rock Movie'. Shot on Super-8mm it is the only documentary on the U.K punk scene w/ Sex Pistols-The Clash and many others. This led to a period directing over 300 music videos for a diverse range of artists. He currently presents a weekly radio show on BBC 6 Music called 'Culture Clash Radio' and still dj's nationally and internationally. Tonight in a one night only show Don will talk about his film making experiences and share some of the moments on the big screen. A History of Educational Shock Cinema
Between 1959 and 1975 a group of volunteers in Mansfield Ohio took it upon themselves to promote Highway Safety by presenting colour footage of careless drives actions: blood stained wreckage, twisted and mangled bodies and very fresh corpses. In the 80’s these films disappeared from the class room and assumed an almost mythical status among those who had once seen them. This film explores the driver’s ed film on a wider scale, with scenes from whimsical classroom films and interviews with such pop culture historians as ephemeral film archivist Richard Prelinger and cult video impresario Mike Vraney. Wisconsin Death Trip
WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP is a strikingly original nonfiction film that tells the strange story of one cursed American community. In the late 1890s, the small rural town of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, suffered through an incredibly bizarre crisis. Economically depressed and battling a diphtheria epidemic, in addition to relentlessly bleak weather conditions, the residents began to collectively lose their minds. Through recreations, old photographs, and newspaper clippings culled from the era, James Marsh's film shows just how bizarre a time in history this actually was.
