this stuff is great! total freewheeling insanity, comedy styling for all you humour addicts and a bit of hip hop flavor for people who care about that sort of thing! me? i'm just in it for the words and the chance to pwn people with those words!
On Tuesday, June 3rd, WordinHand is delighted to present... ...in a Rare Sydney Solo Show... Miles Merrill!
One night only... his new work... "My Short History with Guns"
This month also features the return of John Maddox of Peppermint Tea fame, providing his unique musical accompaniment for the evening.
Miles' new tales are peppered with drug fueled mayhem, handguns, homelessness and Gaia theory.
Master storyteller and inspiration for the recent successful Night Words Festival at the Opera House, Miles has just returned from a tour of China and the USA: Olympic city, Earthquake city, and Ground Zero city.
Merrill is the son of a Black Panther father and a mother whose family tree dates back to British-American Colonialism. His mother's ancestors enslaved his father's. The tension of embattled generations twists it's way through the work of this one-man word-hurling army.
If you've heard of a poetry slam Merrill is the reason why. He's from Chicago, where the art of slam was born, and he has spent the last 4 years introducing slamming to Australia.
He says "slam performances combine poetry with theatre, experimental audio, hip-hop beats, stand-up comedy and political confrontation."
Miles has been the inspiration for WordinHand's monthly SLAM, in which up to 8 contestants vie for prizes and that all-important recognition of their work. With 5 Open Mike slots each month, WordinHand features an entertaining evening of spoken word, poetry and music with up to 15 poets on stage each month.
