Went to the Diana Krall concert (Rod Laver Arena) in Melb last night. Great musicians but the venue was totally unsuitable - too big. It was like we were all sitting watching from a great distance and not part of the concert. No ambience and no screens to see close-ups. A more intimate venue where all singers could interact with their audience would have been better - eg Melb Concert Hall or Dallas Brookes would have been better, but then again one concert at RLA = three at the other venues. Does this mean it all comes down to money - the number of bums on seats for the least number of concerts?performances?

very disappointed, went to hear the artists sing, not to hear backing musicians boost their egos improvising, it would have been nice to hear old favourites,in their original recorded form, Madeline Peyroux was the worst offender

Terrible venue!!!! Unfortunately Diana's voice was off due to a virus and she could only last 1hr 20. Fabulous musicians! But please Gudinski give the fans the "sausage NOT the sizzle"! We paid to see DIANA not 2 hours of diversion!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree venue seats and accoustics appalling. Will not venture there again.Peyroux sang only one good number. Melody Gordot was pick of the bunch. Krall is great but not this night.

Can anyone help me... what did she play between "So Nice" and "Quiet Nights" last night? Here is the set as I remember it, missing that one:

I Love Being Here With You
Do it Again
Let's Fall in Love
Accustomed to his Face
So Nice
???
Quiet Nights
I Get Along Without You Very Well
Boy From Ipanema
Cheek to Cheek
encore: Love Letters

Totally disappointing - sound, visuals, venue, the way Krall raced through some numbers. Felt like we'd been had! Should have stayed home and played the DVDs.

Can anyone tell me how long the whole concert went from beginning to end including supporting acts? Thanks

Disappointed with the concert - I like Diana Krall and went to hear her singing. Instead heard 90% of her band's and the orchestra and lots of jazz improvising. Music is good - but this is not what I was paying for!

I saw a great concert. The venue is not a jazz club, but how do you get a 40 piece orchestra in a jazz club! As if we don't know the limitations of the venue when buying tickets.
As for the quality of the performance, I was astounded by the virtuosity of Ms Krall and her band. Her voice is only one part of the mix, and I do think her voice was a little below par. But it was as if she made up for it in her playing.
As for Melody Gardot, I missed her completely, arriving at 7.30pm. Even thought the tickets said 7.00pm start, Ithe RACV Club, which organised the tickets, were informed by Rod Laver that the show would not start until 7.30pm. This was confirmed to me by management at Rod Laver. So I wonder why the concert started early?

Just returned home from the Brisbane concert which was filmed for a DVD to be released later in the year. Unless Diana, her backing trio and the orchestra are still there re-recording most of the songs, I'd be willing to bet we'll never see the DVD released. Melody Gardot and and Madeleine Peyroux (and bands) performed their sets well and were totally enjoyable. Diana started out well and seemed relaxed, communicative and comfortable. That vibe did not last long. The magic was lost when she began having voice problems. The performance was all down hill from there. She was clearly unhappy and all communication with the audience ceased. A great pity really. She is normally a charismatic performer, but this wasn't her night. It wasn't a good night for audience members either. Diana's backing musicians were professional enough to contimue to give their best in spite of adversity, but Diana was not.

I was also at the concert in Brisbane last night and it was definately worth the 6hr return trip. The only hiccup with Diana's voice (that I noticed!) was at the beginning of a song, so she restarted. It was a fantastic night!

We know the band is good but we didn't need those gratuitous solo performances. I paid to hear Diana Krall sing which she did only 50% of the time. The worst part of the evening was that idiot Richard Wilkins getting the audience to clap at nothing for the DVD cut away shots.

Sydney concert was disappointing. After a long wait we were confronted by 3 rambling, melancholic singers. Normally love Dianna Krall's music but not in Sydney. (I counted 8 people asleep around me at one stage !!!)

what a bunch of negative comments here ! we saw the Ladies in Sydney last night : all three were fabulous, and their respective bands + ACO a delight...you people need to get out more..you have just had the privilege of seeing one of the world's greatest jazz pianists...next time save up and buy better seats, you'll enjoy it more

Mr Martin, you make the assumption that the negative comments come from folks who need to "get out more," have purchased sub-standard seats and are not aware of the performance standard Ms Krall normally delivers. I presume you were not at the Brisbane concert and would not therefore be in a position to criticise the comments of those that were. I can not speak for the other posters, but I had good seats and I am well aware of the high standard of performance that Ms Krall normally delivers. I have seen many great jazz pianists live, including Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson and Count Basie. I am pleased you enjoyed the concert, but please try to refrain from personal criticism of those who were disappointed and have a right to express that disappointment.

Have to say Diana Krall concert was disappointing, best part for me was the coffee I bought after leaving early. I am a fan of Diana and seen her perform live before. I attend may events. Boondall sound systems needs improving, location is shocking.Whole experience was a waste of money and my valuable time. Felt like Diana was having a night gig with her friends and forgot about her "paying" guests. I didn't pay to hear musician solos. Shame on organisers/promoters.
Just for the record, if Richard Wilkins wants my applause, he would have to pay me.

Saw Diana at Bimbadgen Hunter Valley last night. Again same comments, a 4 piece outfit including Diana playing to each other. Few selected comments to the crowd, voice was ok but tissues at the ready and used, so she is still not well.A set that lasted 1hr then two encores, very dissapointing. Just wish sometimes the artist would say something like "Sorry about tonight, keep your tickets and i'll reschedule another time when i'm up for it"

Bimbadgen, Hunter Valley last Saturday night. Weather perfect, Diana sublime - what quality, what musicianship. We all saw the first performance of Dylan's "Twist of Fate". It was breath-taking. The only thing everyone wanted was MORE! (It's JAZZ you mob, not U2) Tissues, bugs in the piano, people dissing the performance-none of this matters when the quality was there (not quantity you supermarket-shoppers).

Dear Peter...I too was at Bimbadgen and when you say Quantity i think any supermarket shopper who paid $175 FOR A GOLD RESERVED SEAT and only saw a performers back the entire night would feel they've been cheated at the the aisle. Not even a big screen on the left side of the stage to see more was offered. Where were you Front Row? Despite all this yes more was needed from a performer whose playing was impeccable but seemed to be in a rush to go home.Far from her best effort for sure as the majority here seem to agree.

MELODY GARDOT WAS SENSATIONAL - DIANA A LET DOWN!
Was most excited to see Diana at the Syd Entertainment Cnt last week as I had heard great things about her previous tours. To be honest it was so disappointing, not worth the money, she didn't sing a lot and when she did seemed to have trouble reaching the notes, the concert was too long and she gave too little, she seemed over it, tired, it was an effort. Her last song she walked off, maybe because she noticed how many people were asleep or left early. A real shame. I won't pay to see her again I'm afraid! Melody Gardot was sensational, could have sat and listened to her the whole time!

Both my partner and I are professional musicians who love jazz. We recently attended Rochford Winery on March 8, 2010 (narrowly avoiding the inclement Melbourne rain) and waited anxiously for Diana to appear. After enjoying several high quality support acts, Diana arrived on stage and her first number (‘I Love Being Here With You’) was so ridiculously fast that she could hardly enunciate the vocal line, whilst her band (as good as they are) were going like the ‘clappers’ to keep up! As we have experienced on previous occasions, Diana ditched a couple of songs after only a few bars, opting for an alternate number (very surprising for a professional musician?). Throughout the concert, Diana had little to no interaction with the audience and seemed to be thoroughly ‘over’ the entire tour. The show lasted for a miniscule 50 minutes and we were of the opinion that perhaps Diana should have re-scheduled the event out of respect for her fans and high paying patrons. It takes a lifetime to build a reputation as a world-class female jazz musician (and Diana Krall has certainly earned it), but as an entertainer you must never forget your most valuable asset…your audience.

Diana Krall was fabulous at Rochford on Monday night. Interacted well with the audience and gave a great vocal and instrumental performance, more than ably supported by her band. Melody and Madeline were both very good also with Melody being much better in person than on the only cd I have of hers. Katie was for me a little disappointing when she sang high and for effect; middle register songs were good.

The emotion and message of each song is conveyed through music alone. I never get bored of this because of the different ways in which the emotion can be identified with.

This to me is talent from diana krall and her band.

I saw both the Sydney and Bowral performances, and enjoyed with much satisfaction.

What a great way to spend an evening with family!
