What has happened to The King Of Trip Hop?
Has he been consumed by his own ego?
After 15 years of being a die hard fan and longing to see him live, Tricky's Melbourne show was just plain embarrassing.
One could only laugh when Phil Colins 'I can feel it coming in the air tonight...' was blasted from the speakers as the band came on stage. That was easily forgiven by his brooding cover of 'The Love Cats' which opened the set. Kids, the rest is history. Tricky was so wasted on drugs he couldn't even perform. he sat out at least 3 songs with his back to his audience and let his back up singer do all the work. he even cut her off short 3/4s through a song much to her dismay. Their faces said it all. The band and stage crew looked anxious and disposable
trying to anticipate what tricky would do/sing/forget to sing next.
I felt incredibly sad and embarrassed for the guy. Does Tricky often perform this way or did he just underestimate the strength of Australian drugs?
I don't regret going, he pulled through on a couple of songs and the sound was fantastic. But i am such a fan that if i knew he was going to be so wasted and incompetent i wouldn't have bothered, only because he looked lost and pathetic, so sad to see in someone so talented and who has contributed so greatly in shaping my world.
Who was the woman he was performing with?
She deserves a gold medal, the show was hers. |
