Shorts & Sounds
Where cinema meets live music in an unforgettable night!
Shorts & Sounds is coming to the gorgeous 505 on Thursday the 23rd August. In a sneak-peak of the 2012 Festival, you will be the first to see a selection of short films curated for the 7th Sydney Latin American Film Festival.
SHORTS
We will be presenting three distinctively different shorts that are bound to please the most discerning moviegoer.
ENTERTAINMENT
The evening boasts an incredible line-up featuring some of Sydney’s most exciting Latin performers, including new and inspiring musicians Chirimeros, an energetic 5-piece exploring Cumbias on traditional instruments with a strong Afro-Colombian influence. Adding to the talent will be the acoustic duo Juankarlos & Cafesur and a rare and not-to-be-missed appearance by Papalote who will be performing a variety of contemporary Latin American music from Cuban Son to Andean Music.
JUANKARLOS & CAFESUR
Presenting a trio composed of guitar, vocal and percussion this trio presents a mix of classical and fresh rhythms from various music genres including 'Bolero', rock in Spanish, ballads, Cuban son, salsa among others.
CHIRIMEROS
An energetic band with folkloric influences from all reaches of Colombia. From the Caribbean they take and play the Cumbian Gaita, Puya, Porro, Merengue and Mapale rhythms. From the Pacific they give us a taste of rhythms such as the Currulao, the Jota and the Porro Chocoano. These rhythms demonstrate the African influences mixed with those of indigenous and native Colombian. Finally, Chirimeros will perform traditional music from the Andean region of Colombia, which exposes us to Pasillo and the Banbuco. Band members include, creator Francisco Javier Castillo, Daniela Castillo, Alejandro Cardoso, Julian Arevalo and Jorge Forero. Their instruments are those of a typical traditional format, to name a few the Llamador, Alegre, Redobelante, Patillo de Choque, Maracones, Guacharaca, Guasa and an array of traditional wind instruments.
PAPALOTE
Papalote - Justo Diaz, Olympia Karanges and Juan Carlos Rios, has performed widely throughout Australia and New Zealand for more than 3 decades. They have been spokespeople for the culture of Latin America and indefatigable cultural workers. In 1980 they created an educational performance, which has toured extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand. Their music blends the culture of three continents: the ancient sounds of traditional flutes, guitars and the rhythms of African drums. They were founder members of La Peña and when the international Latin American New Song Movement began, Papalote became a leading exponent of this movement in Australia, playing an important role in bringing a political message and the musical heritage of Latin America to the rest of the world. Papalote presents concerts from music of the Andes to the African rhythms of the Caribbean and Brazilian Bossa Nova with a high level of musicianship and commitment.
