The first Silver Shadow Stakes was run in 1988 when it was won by a horse named Startling Lass. The Silver Shadow Stakes is suited to fillies that have just returned to racing after a winter spell or have competed in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes the week prior. The Silver Shadow Stakes was not held in 2007 due to the outbreak of Equine Influenza in Australia. The field is often made up of horses that have proved successful during their two-year-old campaign. Horses that run in the Silver Shadow Stakes often go on to run in races such as the Group 2 Furious Stakes and the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes later in the carnival.
