Giant ants are invading Federation Square this July school holidays, but there’s no need to break out the bug spray... the human-sized insects are the star performers of Fed Square’s free puppet program, held each year during the July School Holiday. Created by Polyglot Theatre, Ants is part roving performance, part treasure hunt and part interactive installation that children of all ages will be itching to see. Children can look on and wonder at the busyness of the ants as they set to work, patrolling the cobblestones and carrying giant food such as a lettuce leaf or a sandwich with a bite taken out of it, but before they know it, the ants will have enlisted their new found friends in the crowd as helpers and together they set off on a treasure hunt for hidden ant eggs. The ants lead the children on a wonderful path of discovery, unearthing eggs that are scattered far and wide around Fed Square and returning them to the safety of the ants’ nest, which they then help build. Along the way, the children will learn to walk in the shoes of an ant - albeit on two legs! The treasure hunt will be interrupted with music signalling danger and the children must scatter and run to safety. When all is clear the ants gesture, in a way only an ant can, that all is safe and back to work they go. With free activities every day of the week, Federation Square offers an instant and affordable cure to the school holiday boredom! In addition to Puppets at Fed Square, ArtPlay, ACMI, The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and the NGV Kids Corner have a line up of free and affordable exhibitions, workshops and film screenings just for kids. If tummies are growling after all that work, head for a casual lunch at one of Fed Square family-friendly cafes or restaurants, or the river bank is a perfect picnic spot but don’t forget to leave just a crumb for the ants!
