Discover another side of rural Australia at the National Archives of Australia with Smalltown, an exhibition of stark yet beautiful large-format colour images by photographer Martin Mischkulnig. Evoking a sense of desolation, the photographs depict the vast space and 'built ugliness' often found in remote areas of Australia. The accompanying book 'Smalltown' includes the full selection of photographs by Mischkulnig, along with an essay by Tim Winton that challenges sentimental myths of Australian rural life. The book will be available for purchase at the exhibition. Smalltown comes to Canberra from the Historic Houses Trust of New South Wales (HHTNSW).
