Orange Civic Theatre in association with the Orange Regional Arts Foundation presents An Evening with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Terence Dennis Dame Kiri has been established as a major international artist for four decades and over that time she has become a frequent star in the leading opera houses of the world and soloist with the most distinguished orchestras and conductors. Honorary doctorates have been awarded to Dame Kiri from both Oxford and Cambridge universities, and from nine other universities. She was created a Dame in 1982, and has been awarded both the Order of Australia and the Order of New Zealand. A long term sports fan, Dame Kiri evaluates her own situation (and her career’s longevity) by comparing it to a professional sports person. "...Discipline, stickability, maintaining good health, and with constant attention to technique. The sportsman with brute force is impressive—but that force becomes tired. In the long run, it’s the player with good technique who doesn’t tire. Singing is exactly the same… excellent technique will last the longer.” An especially bred orchid and a rose both carry her name, and in lighter vein she gets amused delight that three recipes have also been created for her—Curry Te Kanawa, Kiri Te Kumara, and a dessert named Kiwi Te Kanawa. In recent times Dame Kiri’s focus has gradually shifted towards a greater love of recitals and concerts, and away from performing in Opera. Terence Dennis regularly partners leading resident musicians and distinguished visiting artists in recital. These have included such world acclaimed international figures as soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, bass baritone Sir Donald McIntyre, tenor Keith Lewis, mezzo-sopranos Sarah Walker and Kathleen Kuhlmann and soprano Margaret Marshall. Other performances of special note include the sellout recital in the Sydney Opera House with American soprano Alessandra Marc.
