In collaboration with the family of Bessie Gibson, the Tweed River Art Gallery is delighted to present a small exhibition of work by one of Australia’s most accomplished and recognised painters of the 1920s and 1930s. Drawn predominately from the family’s collection, and complemented by loans from the University of Queensland Art Museum and Phillip Bacon Galleries, this exhibition highlights the work of an intriguing artist who was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salons. Elizabeth (Bessie) Dickson Gibson (1868–1961) was born in Ipswich and had early artistic training under painter Godfrey R. Rivers at the Central Technical College in Brisbane. From previous scholarly research into her life and artistic career, it is evident that it was here that Miss Gibson began her specialisation in miniature painting. Gibson lived in Europe for over forty years, mostly in Paris, and studied at the atelier of Claudio Castelucho under Frances Hodgkins and American painter Edwin Scott. She also briefly studied miniature painting under Mlle Debillemont-Chardon. Gibson’s work included miniatures of family or friends, formal portrait studies in oils, and landscapes influenced by Whistler. A number of her exquisite miniatures are assembled in this exhibition alongside other works that were created during her life abroad, including a number of watercolours that exemplify her flair for colour and fluidity of line. This exhibition is generously supported by The University of Queensland Art Museum and Philip Bacon Galleries, Brisbane.
