Sydney-based artist, lecturer and curator Oliver Watts interrogates society, politics and the art world. A concern with representations of history underpins much of his work, which asks the question: How do images command? Taking loaded events and images as his starting point, ranging from politics and sport to religion, Watts explores the role of art in assessing and challenging the frameworks of power and society. In his upcoming exhibition Watts references Kafka, re-imagining and re- imaging the work of Titorelli, the court, and sometime landscape, painter, in Kafka’s novel The Trial’. Titorelli moves between art and law, advising the central character K about court proceedings. The works in this exhibition stage Titorelli’s advice to K, exploring painting for both the stories it can tell but also for the baggage it takes with it. Watts paints with a restrained looseness, his mosaic-like brushstrokes languid and gestural. The result is paintings that are seductive, rich and complex. Watts completed his PhD in art history and jurisprudence at the University of Sydney in 2009 and lectures at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW). He has been a selected entrant in prizes including the Mosman Art Prize, the Helen Lempriere travelling Scholarship and the Brett Whitely Scholarship Exhibition and won the Noel Chettle Art Prize.
