Jenny Sages: Paths to portraiture is an exhibition of portraits by Jenny Sages (b. 1933), accompanied by drawings that the artist made in preparation for the works, and materials that inspired and influenced them. Drawing her ideas is as natural to Jenny Sages as speaking. Her inquisitive, intelligent and effusive personality is woven through her artworks, which are linked through her life experience. They reflect the time she has spent walking the country; her compulsive reading; her fateful meetings; and her exploration of her own Russian background. Subjects of the large portraits, most of them made in the unusual and challenging medium of encaustic, include Emily Kngwarreye, Helen Garner, Kerryn Phelps and Jackie Stricker, and the artist herself. The exhibition is accompanied by a documentary by independent filmmaker Catherine Hunter, which affords an intimate and moving perspective on Jenny Sages’ life and work. Works in the exhibition are drawn from the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; the Tweed River Art Gallery; and Jenny Sages. Jenny Sages: Paths to portraiture is an exhibition of the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, in conjunction with the Tweed River Art Gallery, Murwillumbah. This exhibition is supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of Australian cultural material across Australia. Location: The Withey Family Gallery at Tweed River Art Gallery Opening hours: Open from 10:00am to 5:00pm Wednesday to Sunday. Closed Good Friday and Christmas Day. Admission Free. Everyone is welcome. Bring your friends along!
