Filomena Coppola’s works on paper images of imaginary botanical specimens are exhibited at Australian Galleries Smith Street, Melbourne. Coppola’s pastel on paper works investigate the minutiae of the floral. Her invented specimens blur the boundaries between flora and fauna incorporating fur and animal patterning. The images reference the iconic Tasmanian tiger, as well as anatomically suggestive curves and protrusions. Texture plays an important role in Coppola’s biological portraits, evident in the progression from smooth to rough, darkness to light on the surface of her invented plant life. The exhibition features Coppola’s pastel on paper works, as well as a dirt/soil floor installation incorporating Coppola’s recognisable patterning, inspired by the colonial wallpaper designs of William Morris. Coppola has exhibited in Mildura, Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart and internationally in Philadelphia, USUSA. She has been included in group shows at Charles Sturt University, Grafton Regional Gallery, Bendigo Art Gallery and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. Her work is in the collections of Artbank, the City of Hobart, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery and the Print Council of Australia. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at the University of Tasmania, followed by a Masters of Fine Art at the same institution.
