During the exhibition (Stories from the city, stories from the sea, queer urban tales) American performance artist Martha McDonald hosts song tours of the Maribyrnong River aboard the HMS Blackbird, drawing on old sea chanties, seafaring yarns and the art of sailor's knots. Transporting small groups of audience members from Melbourne's CBD to the Substation in Newport at twilight, the performance features McDonald's signature blend of singing, storytelling and obsessive handcrafts and concludes in a site-specific installation at the Substation. Audience members also experience the exhibition with site-specific installations and works created by Martha McDonald and by artists Andrew Browne, Lucas Grogan, T.V Moore, Patrick Pound, Kate Just & Heather B Swann. Otherworldly bronze sculptural weaponary, neo-primitive homeo-erotic wall drawings, sea faring yarns, ghostly projections of the departed and photographic renderings of nocturnal city fringe - you are the flaneur in this queer urban tale.
