Adrift continues Julian Twigg’s fascination with the sea and the tankers which are at home there. His paintings are gestural, using thick applications of oil paint to depict the industrial bulk of the cargo vessels and their journey’s through the many dispositions of weather and water. The works are striking in their reduction of forms to bold, emblematic shapes. Combined with the painterly surface they are powerful and evocative of the raw vitality of the ocean. Twigg’s dynamic maritime paintings are in no way old fashioned and formal as the genre of maritime painting suggests, instead they exude the energy of the busy coming and goings of the shipping lanes around Melbourne. Also included in this exhibition are a series of ceramic vessels and tiles. While ceramic is a departure for Twigg this new exploration is unmistakably of his oeuvre. Adrift is Twigg’s 13th solo exhibition, he was awarded the ANL Maritime Prize in 2007 and the Waverley Art Prize in 2010. His works are collected by numerous public institutions including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Bundanon Trust, NSW. Adrift is current until Sunday 19 February 2012.
