The soldiers are greeted warmly by Leonato and his charming daughter, Hero and are consequently invited to stay for the month. Leonato's witty niece, Beatrice, engages in a merry war of words with Benedick; both talking a mile a minute, proclaiming their scorn for love, marriage and each other. In contrast, Claudio & Hero upon meeting for the first time are rendered practically speechless by their love for one another and are quickly betrothed. Everyone is convinced Benedick and Beatrice should couple, so a cunning plan to trick them into confessing their love for each other is devised. Meanwhile the bastard brother of Don Pedro, devises a meddling plan to trick Claudia into rejecting Hero at the altar accusing her of being unfaithful.
