After a tragic 2011 marked by a fatal road accident, Brisbane four-piece Flannelette make a triumphant return to the stage on February 11th at The Hi-Fi Bar with their hard hitting, chunky riffs. 2012 will see the band reclaim Brisbane’s rock crown and imprint into the heads of the critics for all the right reasons. The band began in 2009 with founding members Scramble and Tyler Gunn. They’d left their small country town to pursue their musical dream in the bright lights of Brisbane. Through a chance meeting a pub, bassist Michael Fisher jumped on board and along with drummer Gordon Paterson, Flannelette had finally found its true feet. Playing shows throughout Queensland and scoring regular radio play, a break into the music scene was imminent for the four-piece. Yet all was to be short lived. Come May 2011, their band van had been struck by a truck on the way home from a festival. Michael Fisher, Tyler Gunn and friend Ria Dedden were killed, with Scramble being the only survivor. Gordon had been in a different vehicle, and in an instant, the band was no more. They had lost their members, their friends, their equipment, but not the belief in their music. Six months on and there’s been a lot of hard work with fundraisers, donations and finally days of auditions. Flannelette are back, and in a big way. Equipped with their new members, guitarist Shaun Belcher and bassist Dave Hardy, the sky is the limit with new sounds and a new lease of life ‘We’re back’ says Scramble, ‘ And we’re ready to put our sorely missed music back out there where it’s supposed to be, out there for everyone to enjoy. We’ve found Dave and Shaun, new equipment, and some incredible new tunes. We’ve seen the bottom now it’s time to see the top.’ When asked what their sound is like, Flannelette’s vocalist Scramble replies with something quite distinct. ‘Our sound? It’s like four electric angry dinosaurs pumped up on Weet-Bix... But better’ With influences drawn from bands such as Led Zeppelin, Grinspoon and Audioslave, it’s no surprise Flannelette are confident in producing a massive sound.
