Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and shopping list or two during his lifetime. The Australian Shakespeare Company’s latest production crunches that down into a two-hour live performance. And then they add puppets. A Midsummer Night's Dream (behind the scenes) certainly isn’t your typical Shakespearean production. Directed by Glenn Elston, the action centres on a group of performers arguing over which classic production they should perform for a wedding. In the process they segue between Macbeth, Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear and Othello at a rate of knots. And hey, if that isn’t abstract enough for you, the cast interpret these classics via a mix of song, dance, rap, ballet, opera and puppetry.
