In July 1937, the Nazis' famous Degenerate Art exhibit opened at the former Institute of Archaeology in Munich. Among the works in the show, which had been confiscated from galleries around Germany in order to be ridiculed by the Reich, was Rudolph Belling's elegant abstract bronze ‘Triad' (1918-19). ‘Triad' comes to Melbourne as part of an impressive show of German art spanning from before the first World War to the eve of the second. "This work was shown with titles saying how stupid and mentally deficient it was," says Jacqui Strecker, curator of The Mad Square, which opens at NGV International later this year. "But at the same time Belling had a work in the building opposite, an exhibition of ‘great' German art - a figurative sculpture of a champion German boxer - which was a complete contradiction of the art politics." Red-faced organisers eventually decided that Belling wasn't a degenerate artist after all and quietly removed ‘Triad' from display.
