Welcome to the Labyrinth: contemporary artist Simon Wilde’s latest exhibition. A journey through the raw juxtapositions of steel with acrylic paint, oxidisations of metal into rust, photography, patterns of captured light and installation.
Head down to Global Gallery for opening night on Thursday February 6 at 7pm, daily between 06-19 February, or to meet the artist on Saturday 18 February.
Wilde’s new works are a captivating showcase of combusting mediums and their formations into brilliantly colourful art pieces, some of impressive scale. Their uniqueness comes from his ability to use scientific methods to form artistic patterns never seen before.
The Sydney born artist, who lives in Shanghai and Australian equally uses sheets of thin steel as his canvas, and through a process of oxidisation creates layered textures - grinding steel surfaces into art. He then applies water-based paints to create patterns of colour and shape, the contours created by the chemical reactions between oil and acrylics.
Wilde says that “my main interest in the paintings is the distinctive nature of the process and the results you achieve out of it. It's highly experimental and I feel that the results are quite unlike any other paintings I have seen.”
Wilde’s Labyrinth exhibition is true to its name. Stepping into Global Gallery, Paddington’s hub of creative force, viewers can expect a journey through Wilde’s new works, the starting point, his collection of non-figurative rust paintings on steel bases.
Next, Wilde leads viewers onto his intricate photographs, taken of his steel works.
Resulting from the chemical nature of the rusting technique, a detailed complexity is created deep within the works.
Only by taking close up photos of these subtleties and blowing them up hundreds of times, can viewers appreciate the delicate beauty existing within these large scale rust paintings.
A change in direction, Wilde then takes viewers to the fluorescent underground of the Osaka subway for the next stop of the Labyrinth, “Hong Kong Neon.” Captured in the busy city during Wilde’s world travels, the series of long exposure photographs depict the patterns emerging from the interplay of light and movement.
Finally, at the centre of the Labyrinth stands Wilde’s installation, brining onlookers to their destination.
Titled “The Labyrinth,” the two piece ensemble made entirely of industrial materials, combined with contemporary photography and written world, confronts art fans as it sits on the ground and hangs from the ceiling. The large sculptural piece engraved with a poem, only to be uncovered by viewers as they reach their destination.
A journey that mustn’t be missed, Simon Wilde’s Labyrinth heads to Global Gallery this next month.
