David R. Blühdorn's photographic exhibition explores contemporary attitudes towards Hobart's iconic mountaintop. The summit of Mt Wellington is popularly used for wilderness-type recreation, as a tourist destination, and as a weekend playground. Its sub-alpine topography is superimposed with artefacts of modern technological society. This exhibition explores the ways in which the summit's quasi-natural environment is perceived by and, in turn, reflects the community that interacts with it. The images interweave diverse formal threads (mist, snow, sun, moon, people, parking) into discrete artworks, each revealing an aspect of 'place'. They offer a subtle journey from the arbitrariness inherent in Western place-naming to the more integrated 'feeling of, and for, country' implicit in indigenous place metaphor, and signified by the title Kunanyi. The works present an itinerant's perspective: examining and questioning our modern notions of place - with specific reference to the top of 'The Mountain' - our conceptions of it, and how these might colour our experiences of it.
