Heart of Darkness is the South Australian Museum's first significant exhibition of objects and photographs from Africa. Twenty six photographs and 126 objects from the upper Congo purchased by the SA Museum in 1932 had formed part of the "Congo Exhibition" that opened in London on 18 September 1909. The exhibition, containing objects sent by Protestant missionaries, was to raise awareness in the United Kingdom of "the atrocities which were taking place in the upper Congo". A selection of this collection will be on display. The exhibition at the South Australian Museum coincides with the annual conference of the African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific (AFSAAP) hosted in Adelaide by Flinders University.
